ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate lunch supply of public primary school canteens in Zhejiang Province, and to provide a basis for the scientific guidance of school lunch.@*Methods@#During May to Jun. and Sept. to Oct. in 2019, lunch food supply was weighed and recorded and the number of diners in 44 public primary school canteens were summarized. Each investigation lasted for one week.@*Results@#Food was mainly based on the taste of the students (40.91%) in the school canteen. About 45.45% of the schools referred to the Nutrition Guidelines of School Meals for students meals when making recipes in the school canteen. The supplies of cereals, vegetables, fruits, livestock and poultry meat, fish and shrimp, eggs, milk, soybean nuts, vegetable oil and salt were 109.05, 118.01, 0, 63.96, 9.25, 11.31, 0, 10.68, 10.47, 2.54 g. The supply of vegetable oil was basically the same as the recommended amount ( P >0.05). The supplies of energy, protein, calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin B 1, vitamin B 2, vitamin C, dietary fiber were 820.84 kcal, 32.79 g, 164.18 mg, 7.84 mg, 4.71 mg, 23.07 μgRAE, 0.41 mg, 0.35 mg, 20.47 mg, 2.34 g, 37.56% of energy from fat and 48.47% of energy from carbohydrate. The supply of vitamin B 1 was basically the same as the recommended amount ( P >0.05). There were no significant differences in all kinds of food and nutrients between urban and rural primary schools ( P >0.05).@*Conclusion@#Lunch supply is not optimistic in public primary school canteens in Zhejiang Province, with unreasonable structure and fails to agree with current nutritional recommendations. It is suggested that the scientific guidance of students meals should be carried out according to the survey results combined with the characteristics of local diet.

ABSTRACT

Objective @#To explore the association of dietary niacin intake and metabolic syndrome ( MS ) and its components among adults in Zhejiang Province, so as to provide the reference for dietary intervention of MS.@*Methods@#Using the multi-stage cluster random sampling method, the permanent residents aged 18 years and above were selected and investigated by a questionnaire developed by China Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Their waist circumference, blood pressure, glucose and lipid were measured. The daily dietary niacin intake of each person were calculated by "24-hour dietary review for 3 consecutive days", and divided into Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 groups according to quartiles. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the association of niacin intake with the risks of MS and its components. @*Results@#Among 2 438 participants, 871 cases with MS were detected, with a detection rate of 35.73%. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that compared with niacin intake Q1 group, Q2 ( OR=0.741, 95%CI: 0.561-0.978 ) and Q4 group ( OR=0.679, 95%CI: 0.487-0.947 ) had a lower risk of MS, Q2 ( OR=0.688, 95%CI: 0.516-0.919 ) and Q4 group ( OR=0.678, 95%CI: 0.479-0.960 ) had a lower risk of abdominal obesity, Q4 group ( OR=0.721, 95%CI: 0.536-0.969 ) had a lower risk of hyperglycemia. Further stratificating by gender, compared with niacin intake Q1 group, Q2 ( OR=0.664, 95%CI: 0.453-0.972 ) and Q3 group ( OR=0.646, 95%CI: 0.432-0.965 ) in women had a lower risk of MS, Q2 (OR=0.667, 95%CI: 0.460-0.967) and Q3 group ( OR=0.607, 95%CI: 0.408-0.902 ) had a lower risk of abdominal obesity; Q2 group ( OR=1.836, 95%CI: 1.202-2.805 ) in men had a higher risk of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.@*Conclusion@#Niacin intake is associated with an increased risk of MS, abdominal obesity and hyperglycemia.

ABSTRACT

We have developed analytical methods to measure the biological functions of pVGI.1(VEGF2), a naked plasmid DNA product containing vascular endothelial growth factor 2 used in clinical trials for coronary artery diseases (CAD) and peripheral artery diseases (PAD). After being injected into muscles, vascular endothelial growth factor 2 (VEGF-2), presumably expressed in muscle tissues, binds to the endothelial cell receptors VEGFR2 or VEGFR3, triggering the downstream responses including cell proliferation and vascularization. As it is important to make sure clinical material is biological active, we developed a quantitative assay first to measure the receptor binding activity of the pVGI.1(VEGF2) gene product expressed by the transfected host cells, and then a qualitative assay to confirm the cell proliferation promoting activity of the expressed protein. In both assays the signals were plotted directly against input DNA concentrations used to transfect the host cells. We confirmed specificity for both assays. In addition, we demonstrated acceptable levels of spike recovery (86.7-116 percent), precision (largest relative standard deviation (RSD)=19.3 percent), linearity and range (60-140 percent relative potency, 15 - 35 ug/mL) for the quantitative assay. We intend to use the potency assays for routine lot release and stability studies.
